For the first time, exceptional award-winning artworks are now up for sale, reinforcing India’s dedication to cultural mapping and enhancing the livelihoods of artists.
The 64th National Exhibition of Art (NEA), hosted by the Lalit Kala Akademi, India’s premier institution for the arts, kicked off on August 5, 2025, in New Delhi. The event was marked by a vibrant inauguration that highlighted India’s extensive visual heritage alongside its flourishing contemporary art scene.
The ceremony was attended by distinguished guests, including Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, the Union Minister for Culture and Tourism, who served as the Chief Guest. Other notable attendees included Shri Vivek Aggarwal, Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, Ms. Amita Prasad Sarbhai, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, Shri Nand Lal Thakur, Vice Chairman of the Lalit Kala Akademi, and Shri Rajeev Kumar, Secretary of the Lalit Kala Akademi.

In a first for the event, the Akademi has announced that this year’s award-winning artworks at the NEA will be available for purchase. This groundbreaking initiative is designed to provide direct benefits to artists and promote a culture of art acquisition in India. It aligns with the Government of India’s National Mission on Cultural Mapping, which aims to identify, support, and sustain artistic talent throughout the nation.

In his keynote address, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Union Minister for Culture and Tourism, Government of India, emphasized the significance of the exhibition, stating, “This event transcends a mere display of artworks; it serves as a vibrant cultural platform that highlights the talents of both emerging and established artists from across the nation. The exhibition skillfully intertwines contemporary, traditional, folk, and tribal art, showcasing the diverse and rich tapestry of Indian artistic expression.”

He added, “I’m truly pleased to see that this year, the Akademi has made a meaningful move by promoting the sale of artworks. This initiative not only fosters self-reliance among artists but also bolsters our creative economy. In an era where art, culture, and economic growth are becoming more intertwined, such actions are both timely and forward-thinking.”

He wrapped up his thoughts by stating, “Art has evolved beyond just galleries and museums; it now catalyzes social change. Whether it’s in education, tourism, employment, or inclusion, the influence of art is rapidly broadening. So, we must empower our artists and link their work to sustainable opportunities, which should be a fundamental aspect of our cultural policy. I’m pleased to see Lalit Kala Akademi spearheading this crucial change.”
Shri Vivek Aggarwal, Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, remarked, “The 64th National Exhibition of Art exhibits a rich array of exceptional artworks from across the nation, crafted in various mediums. This not only highlights the vastness and diversity of Indian art but also fosters meaningful creative dialogue among artists. The Akademi’s effort to unite both emerging and established artists through such exhibitions is truly praiseworthy.”

This year’s National Exhibition of Art proudly presents a curated collection of 283 artworks, meticulously selected from over 5,900 submissions from across India through a thorough two-tier jury process. The mediums featured include painting, sculpture, graphics, installation, photography, and more, showcasing the richness and depth of Indian artistic expression.
The evening also celebrated the achievements of 20 distinguished Lalit Kala Akademi Awardees, honoring their innovation and excellence in the visual arts. Additionally, veteran artists Shri Krishen Khanna, Shri Ram V. Sutar, and Smt. Ira Chaudhari was recognized for their outstanding lifetime contributions to Indian art and culture.
During the ceremony, two major publications were launched:
1. The 64th NEA Exhibition Catalogue, detailing the showcased works and artists.
2. A special book titled “Printmaker for All Seasons,” which honors the life and legacy of Padma Shri Shyam Sharma.
The exhibition was officially inaugurated at the Lalit Kala Akademi Galleries, Rabindra Bhavan, with a ceremonial ribbon cutting and lamp lighting, followed by a walkthrough led by the dignitaries.
The 64th National Exhibition of Art is now open to the public from August 6 to September 15, 2025, daily from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM, providing audiences with a unique opportunity to engage with and appreciate a piece of India’s vibrant creative future.
