Jyoti in Reverse
Jyoti in Reverse presents a compelling fusion of folk and traditional imagery with the bold visual language of Pop Art, showcasing Bhatt’s recent paintings and his ongoing engagement with the medium of reverse painting. His fascination with this distinctive technique began in childhood in Bhavnagar, where he was captivated by watching a signboard artist paint on glass. Years later, the medium resurfaced in his artistic journey when his mentor, K. G. Subramanyan, experimented with reverse paintings during the 1970s.
Driven by curiosity and a spirit of experimentation, Bhatt embraced the technical challenges of reverse painting, viewing each mistake as an opportunity for learning and discovery. “Working in this medium allowed me to learn from my own technical mistakes,” he reflects. The works featured in this exhibition revisit themes and imagery from his earlier printmaking practice, photography, and paintings, reimagining familiar subjects through intricate detail, vibrant colour, and layered visual narratives. Through these striking compositions, Bhatt transforms memory, tradition, and personal artistic history into a fresh and engaging contemporary expression.
