Zameen

Birla Academy of Art and Culture presents Zameen as part of its 59th Annual Celebrations, on view from 9 January to 8 February 2026 at its Kolkata premises. Established in 1967, the Academy’s annual exhibition continues to be a significant platform for contemporary artistic practices in India.
Curated by Ina Puri, Zameen brings together leading contemporary artists including Zarina Hashmi, Mithu Sen, Riyas Komu, Shambhavi Singh, Birendra Yadav and others to reflect on land as memory, labour, inheritance, displacement, and resistance in a rapidly changing social and political landscape.
The Annual Exhibition also features a competitive section showcasing works by young and emerging artists from across the country, reinforcing the Academy’s long-standing commitment to nurturing new voices.
This year introduces Projects, a new focus on public art, featuring Terra Kolkata | Burnt Earth and Living City, a site-specific installation by Anirban Das honouring Bengal’s clay artisans and living craft traditions.
A series of performances, including Draupadi by Anjana Chandak, Sharaccharu Chakram by Chidakash Kalalaya Centre for Art and Divinity, and Swar Ranjani by Pt. Ajoy Chakrabarty, complements the exhibition programme.
