Hymns of Medhini

Ojas Art presents artist Abhishek Singh’s solo show after a decade that traverses a fantastical journey of perennial wisdom, existential curiosities and spiritual oneness

Anubhav Nath, Director of Ojas Art presents a solo exhibition by artist Abhishek Singh titled “Hymns of Medhini”, making it the artist’s first solo outing after a decade. Known for his unique visual storytelling of the mythological world, Abhishek’s oeuvre in this show coalesces original stories with the realms of mythology and imagination. The show opens on February 3 and will be showcased till March 22.

Medhini is a Sanskrit word and means Ancient Earth. As the name suggests, this exhibition is about the lores inspired by the Earth’s wisdom. Abhishek has had a long and nurturing association with Ojas Art, this is the first time the work from this narrative expedition will be showcased, taking one through a fantastical journey of perennial wisdom, existential curiosities and spiritual oneness. This exhibition will feature a body of 30 artworks in ink and gouache on both paper and canvas. His seminal work Vriksha-dootam (2018) is also a part of the showcase.

“Abhishek shares a special connection with nature which is evident in his deep understanding. While he has shown his works worldwide, this solo show is happening after a gap of ten years. His new artworks and stories are an evolution of his unique sensibilities, it will surely be a landmark for his practice,” says Anubhav Nath, Director Ojas Art.

“The hymns of Medhini, are drawn meditations about an ancient Earth, where many stars are submerged in its eternal waters waiting to be invoked, a metaphor for our amniotic memories, rekindling our bond with the earth. It’s greatly inspired by my time in the mountains and with the elephants. It’s an immersive journey, both playful & profound, into its spiritual atmosphere,” says artist Abhishek Singh.

His work has a special resonance with thinkers. He has worked closely with Indian-American author Deepak Chopra and filmmaker Shekhar Kapur.

“The mind is compelled by its nature to define. Yet, beyond definition, there is an absoluteness where you and I, all of existence, are part of one infinite whirl. Where all definition loses meaning reaching a state of stillness. In this realm, art has the ability to guide us from darkness to light, from negativity to positivity. Truly, Abhishek’s art and stories are a yearning to touch the infinite,” says filmmaker Shekhar Kapur.
