SUMMARY:Arboretum - Ebb and Flow
DESCRIPTION:This second edition maps the duo’s travels from Kashmir to Japan through hyper-realistic and intensely detailed painterly effects and unconventional shapes of the canvas. The works in this exhibition draw inspiration from diverse landscapes\, relaying stories on conflict\, grounding the self\, and the idea of home whilst drawing inspiration from trees as cultural artefacts that witness the social and political transitions of the world

SUMMARY:Colour\, Stone\, Chintz\, Grain and Statue
DESCRIPTION:With an illustrious presentation of five celebrated artists Gallery Art & Soul\, Mumbai is taking over the grounds of Bikaner house with Colour\, Stone\, Chintz\, Grain and Statue featuring Revati Sharma Singh & Raj Shahani\, and Act III featuring Vinita Karim\, Mahirwan Mamtani and Jin Sook Shinde. Opening on 29th October 2023\, it displays the legacy and stories of these five diasporic Indian artists depicting tales of longing\, and facets of a life away from the tapestry of visuals and memories that have defined their practices today. \nWithin the halls of the Centre of Contemporary Art is the dual solo: Colour\, Stone\, Chintz\, Grain\, and Statue. For Raj Shahani\, a visit to the New York MET piqued his interest in the history of the Apsara. Fluid feminine forms\, they are neither celestial nor mortal but they are there to entertain with the objective of their lives open-ended. Raj saw a reflection of himself in the Apsaras. Today’s society still takes time to accept a queer friend\, family\, or colleague and assigns roles that don’t allow them to feel complete. With statues of Apsaras across museums in the world broken\, with mutilated limbs\, heads\, and bodies\, Raj felt an urgent need to complete those delicate poses from the Natya-shastras\, adorning their role in metal and stone.  \nIn an ode to her homeland’s memories of collecting grains and harvest\, Himachal-born\, London-based Revati Sharma Singh transforms her abstract canvases of vivid hues where grains are threaded\, cast in metal\, and embroidered around like Zari-work across terraced rice fields\, on gunny bags and delicate porcelain plates. They become seeds that were cast in precious metals\, to be woven. Manifesting her five-decade-long journey she casts a grain in steel making it monumental. \nIn this dual showcase\, Raj and Revati reclaim these emotions for objects that hold their culture through their practices as artists. Experience how materiality finds new meaning in Gallery Art & Soul’s newest dual show Colour\, Stone\, Grain\, Chintz\, and Statue.

SUMMARY:A Soft blanket of plants on tired bodies
DESCRIPTION:A Soft Blanket Of Plants On Tired Bodies shows drawings on paper by Mohit Mahato and drawings made of graphite\, pastel\, oil stick and natural dyes on paper and fabric and an immersive sound installation by Tasneem Lohani. The works question our relationship to leisure time under techno-capitalism while reflecting on the slow\, restful nature of plants. It explores capitalist hustle culture’s effect on our views of productivity and its subsequent impact on our mental faculties and physical bodies. Mohit\, through his meditative practice of drawing\, and Tasneem\, through her practice of yoga and meditation\, explore their kinship with plants. The exhibition probes to make one take a moment to ask what it means to truly rest.

SUMMARY:Beyond The Horizon
DESCRIPTION:Art Pilgrim will be hosting ‘Beyond the Horizon’ an exhibition of paintings of the two stalwarts\, Prem Singh\, former Principal of Government College of Art\, Chandigarh and Zargar Zahoor retired as the Dean of the Jamia Millia Islamia University\, Delhi. The exhibition will be on view starting 6th March till the 1st April 2023. \n“Nature is my inspiration and pure colour is my medium” says Prem Singh. “An organic feel of the silent activity of nature\, intensive chirping of the birds in the low light of morning and evening\, the transcendental of music of light – all  this and much more is an  integral part of my creative quest. It is my humble attempt at “grasping” joy and life as they fly”. \nZargar Zahoor is inspired by the pristine landscapes of Kashmir. Zahoor masters colours and technique to draws on into his work. He believes that colours have an immediate effect on the mind and soul of people.

SUMMARY:Arboretum
DESCRIPTION:If a tree falls in the Metaverse\, does it echo and shake the earth? Do the birds cry in mourning? Thukral and Tagra’s new body of work contends with the increasingly porous boundaries between the online and the offline\, and the new norms that come with this terrain. Imagined as an Arboretum\, the trees that are the inspirations for this series of paintings glitch and fold onto themselves\, repeating\, while other details dissolve into pixels. Hidden behind the leaves\, abstracted characters watch you watching them. Is there any escape from being seen? Painted in photo-realistic detail\, the paintings of Arboretum reverse the desire to photograph everything and stretches time into contemplation: painting flowers as a meditative act of worship. Across the paintings\, the artists reflect this sense of logging data through the systematic organization of details and using dots as visual interruptions. Ideating from the studio that they refer to as a greenhouse\, Thukral and Tagra ask how this world should be? And how can a new public forum evade the glitches that were once commonplace? Like gardeners\, they say\, we pick the weeds\, turn over the soil\, water the plants\, and the Arboretum will bloom. \nJiten Thukral and Sumir Tagra work collaboratively with a wide range of media including painting\, sculpture\, installations\, interactive games\, video\, performance and design. Thukral & Tagra work on new formats of public engagement and attempt to expand the scope of what art can do. They break out of the mediated and disciplinary world and create multi-modal sensory and immersive environments. Their early work dealt with tropes of migration and motifs of a globally manifested consumer culture\, questioning the provenance of Indian identity and its various articulations. Their more recent work has dealt with the interpretation of Indian mythological narratives and symbols\, the on-going social ramifications of the agrarian crisis going on throughout India\, while they have collaborated with other cultural practitioners to explore enhanced modes of communications that can erode boundaries between established disciplines.

SUMMARY:Merging Metamorphosis
DESCRIPTION:This show brings together two powerful artists and independent mediums\, exploring their common experience of the creation of art. Both intrinsically interact with the pieces they make: molding\, nourishing\, creating\, destroying and then ultimately reviving. The works are alive\, incarnations of the artist but also the genesis of the artist’s becoming! \nIn his current series\, Inamdar allows his canvas to participate in its own creation\, allowing it to slowly and whimsically absorb the color and chart its own path. The lines drawn merge into the oil and create unique shapes\, pulling in the viewer to explore their mystery. Surpassing time and space\, the works challenge with their dichotomy: soft and loud\, minimal and maximal\, monotone and colorful\, all in the same moment. In his words\, ‘the artist becomes the instrument\, the work becomes music”. \nDavis embraces a similar dichotomy in his sculptural creations. Sharp stainless steel evolves to become a delicate fluid design and enormity in scale is balanced by sensitivity to the intricacies of his inspiration. Nature is the muse for this series as he brings to life architectural plants like blossoms\, orchids\, creepers and bamboo groves in a truly Contemporary way! Davis’s art pushes the viewer to see these seemingly finite natural elements in a more solid\, permanent and statement form. He describes this endeavor\, ‘I am essentially a maker and my engineering and design educations allow me to push the limits of materials and technologies for a desired effect’.
