SUMMARY:Life After Dread
DESCRIPTION:The showcase depicts the conversations the artist had with his own self. We all talk to ourselves\, but in our own private space\, when no one’s listening. Mind floats in the open when it’s free from\nthe inhibitions. It expresses real feeling beyond the loathsome control of society’s status quo. For Arijit\, the free fall occurred during the lockdowns of global pandemic. In the process of searching\nfor inspiration and breaking the social restrictions that tried to dictate artist’s voice\, it got connected at one point. The bars lifted. Realisations and experiences mattered more than\nanything; this body of work\, i.e. “Life After Dread” was born. It’s a series of paintings that tells the stories from the life of the artist and the encounters he had with others. Stories are personal\,\nsocial\, political and at times talks about the evils that should not be. All of these however\, are connected to all of us\, at some level and at any random point of all our lives. This depiction points\ntowards the psyche that is the driving force of each artwork. Every shade and tone of colour used have meaning which is beyond the obvious and pre-defined interpretations we find around us. So\nblue doesn’t always mean sky or water and green does not signify the vegetation around us. On the other hand\, the black & white pieces are as black & white as it can get; there’s no double\nmeaning to it. What you see is what you get. \nRanbir Rathi\, curator \nNero Art Hub

SUMMARY:Living and Inspired Traditions
DESCRIPTION:The exhibitions of pichwais\, miniature works and even embroidered cloths comes on view at Saffron Art Gallery in Mumbai at the close of the month. This recent collection \, comprising large format exhibits is representative of Indian painting traditions that are still followed by miniature artists of Rajasthan\, Gujarat and most importantly the painting traditions of the Nathdwara pichwai painters. The collection\, which is both an exhibition and an auction of art\, has works featuring mythologies. Krishna lore\, mirror work embroidered cloths as also Ragamala paintings. \nThe works depict well-known themes adopted by this school such as the piece titled ‘Annakut’ by Mahesh Sharma\, depicting the custom of ‘Annakut’. The ‘Tree of Life’ theme comes in for varied interpretations by the artists. Done in accordance with traditional methodology\, the colour scheme follows the strict colour code of blue Krishna\, white for Gajalakshmi\, dark backdrops for the rains with appropriate flora and fauna in the imagery. The spruced backdrops of the Ragamala paintings\, are illustrated with delicate associations such as feminine forms\, deer and  scenes from dawn\, while the sinuous snake-like forms of the monsoons remind one of peacocks and snakes. The tree\, symbolic of the Tree of Life mythology\, has a colourful spread of flora arranged in artistic patternings\, showing colour harmony as also designing expertise. The works being recent makings\, are a boon for collectors and first-time buyers who can be introduced to art collecting through these colourful acquisitions. \n…  Subhra Mazumdar
