SUMMARY:Madhubani’s Soul… Baua Devi
DESCRIPTION:BAUA DEVI: MADHUBANI’S SOUL \nTo look at a work by the Padma Shri awardee Baua Devi is to recognise the grace and gravitas of India’s indigenous arts and crafts that still remain veiled in mystery even today. Her motifs\, her compositional clarity and her stylised figures\, created in intricate flat renderings\, with meticulous repetition create a panorama of scenes that are immersed in the power of rituals\, the faith of religion and festivity. Here in this epic unveiling by Payal Kapoor Director Arushi Arts a connoisseur and collector herself\, we see an encapsulation and a celebration of rustic and rural Madhubani traditions and a way of living of India’s multifarious communities. \nBihar born genius \nBorn in the village of Jitwarpur in Bihar\, over the past 70 years\, Baua Devi has emerged as one of India’s pioneers of Mithila painting. Her ability to create a corollary of conversations from the most humble of compositions meticulously created brings this ancient folk art to people all over the world. Her story says that her talent was first noticed at the tender age of 12 by Mumbai-based artist Bhaskar Kulkarni\, who encouraged her to accompany him to the National Crafts Museum in New Delhi in 1966. Her journey is one of perseverance and perfection in the power of the narrative. \nMythology and folk idioms \nIn her work\, Baua Devi reinterprets mythology and folk tales from the feminine perspective\, using natural handmade colours in her paintings that are both resonant as well as strong in tone and tenor. \nDespite relocating to New Delhi\, Baua Devi remains committed to her village in Bihar\, \nLord Krishna and Gopis \nAmongst these works that speak of community togetherness we see the presence of Lord Krishna the flautist and Muralidharan. She creates Lord Krishna as a beloved character who stands amidst the leaves of the trees\, as the Gopis bathe beneath. Lord Krishna is both subject and muse. \nHis eyes and his poise both have a poignant placement in all the works. The Gopis odhinis hang in dramatic sensuousness from the branches. She also draws a contemporary Kali and a beautiful bevy of elephants as a group along with Lord Krishna as a cowherd with a mother and her calf. \nEarly History \nHer work reminds us of the evolution of social and cultural roles. It is said that Madhubani was discovered by William G Archer\, a British officer\, who took photographs of the paintings and wrote about them in 1949 for Marg magazine after a disaster in Bihar when walls collapsed and works were spread all around the surroundings. Another disaster in the form of a drought in 1966 would nudge the artists out from within those painted walls and into the marketplace. By the time a young Baua found her feet and her oeuvre in Mithila art\, the world recognised her uniqueness. With the prestigious National Award in 1984 she became the sole Mithila artist—and sole Indian woman—to show at the seminal 1989 show\, Magiciens de la Terre in Paris and France. \nMithila to Madhubani \nHistory says that Mithila art originated during the time of the epic Ramayana. Sita’s father\, King Janaka asks the women of Mithila\, a region that encompasses portions of present-day Bihar and Nepal\, to paint the walls of their homes to celebrate the wedding of his daughter with Lord Rama. It later came to be called Madhubani art for the district where the practitioners of this art are concentrated. Common themes include the wedding of Rama and Sita\, the courtship of Lord Krishna and Radha and scenes from the Mahabharata. Baua Devi’s art has found place in several important collections\, in museums in India and abroad. \nUMA NAIR\nCurator & Critic \nNew Delhi

DESCRIPTION:Mahsu Art Society Shimla (MASS)\, a registered non-profit arts organisation based in Himachal Pradesh\, is organising the BRAN International Art Workshop\, a five-day residential art programme to be held from 9 to 13 January 2026 at Brani Kutumb\, Manali\, Himachal Pradesh. The workshop will be inaugurated on 9 January 2026 at 5:30 pm by the Chief Guest Shri Bhuwaneshwar Gaur\, Hon’ble MLA\, Manali Assembly Constituency. \nFormally registered in 2018\, Mahsu Art Society Shimla (MASS) emerged in response to the limited cultural infrastructure outside major urban centres\, particularly the lack of sustained platforms for emerging artists and vulnerable artistic and cultural practices in the Himalayan region. The organisation works with a strong ethical commitment\, emphasising institutional responsibility\, long-term engagement\, and public accessibility. \nOver the years\, MASS has organised nearly twenty-seven solo and group art exhibitions across Shimla\, Delhi\, Madhya Pradesh\, Jaipur\, and other regions of India. In addition\, the organisation has conducted six intensive art workshops integrating education\, dialogue\, and public participation. These initiatives have shaped MASS’s vision of building meaningful and inclusive cultural platforms. \nThe BRAN International Art Workshop is supported by the International Roerich Memorial Trust (IRMT)\, Kullu\, Brani Kutumb\, Manali\, and New Smile Dental Clinic\, Manali\, with Radio Naggar as the media partner. \nThe workshop brings together 39 artists from India and Nepal\, offering a broad platform for contemporary artistic exchange. Of the participating artists\, 26 are women\, reflecting MASS’s commitment to inclusive cultural practice across regions\, generations\, and social backgrounds. \nThe programme primarily focuses on painting\, while also engaging with Himachali folk music\, traditional cuisine\, and regional art traditions. Alongside the resident artists\, students from nearby schools and colleges\, local community members\, educators\, and cultural practitioners will participate through open sessions\, public talks\, and interactive programmes\, strengthening art awareness and community-based education. \nA key objective of MASS is to create long-term platforms for underrepresented and emerging artists who often remain outside institutional visibility\, particularly in geographically remote regions. The organisation actively encourages dialogue between established and eminent artists and emerging practitioners\, fostering mentorship\, shared learning\, and sustained artistic growth. \nMASS also places strong emphasis on safeguarding regional cultural heritage\, highlighting how traditional cultural practices have historically been rooted in sustainability\, ecological balance\, and collective living. These concerns are explored through dialogue-based programmes that connect artistic practice with cultural knowledge and lived experience. \nAs part of its social outreach initiatives\, a Free Dental Check-up Camp will be organised during the workshop on 10 January 2026\, from 11:00 am to 3:30 pm\, with the support of New Smile Dental Clinic\, Manali. \nThe workshop will conclude on 13 January 2026 at 2:00 pm with a visit by the Chief Guest Ms. Torul S. Ravish (IAS)\, Deputy Commissioner\, Kullu\, Himachal Pradesh\, who will view and formally close the exhibition of artworks created during the workshop. \nOn this occasion\, the Dhanku Kala Shri Samman 2026 will be conferred upon Dr. Dev Kanya Thakur\, eminent author and filmmaker from Manali\, in recognition of her outstanding contribution to documenting and interpreting Himachali culture. The award honours the memory of Late Shri Dhanku Ram\, a dedicated stone sculptor and the late father of Dr. Bhader Singh\, Founder of Mahsu Art Society Shimla. Since 2018\, the award has been conferred annually upon eight distinguished artists\, recognising artistic excellence\, cultural commitment\, and lifelong dedication to the arts. \nAdditionally\, two participating artists will receive the Kala Devi Award 2026 for outstanding works created during the workshop. The award commemorates Late Smt. Kala Devi\, wife of Shri Tara Chand Brani and mother of Dr. Chander Kant Brani and Yamuna Brani\, founders of Brani Kutumb\, acknowledging her legacy and Brani Kutumb’s continued support for art and culture.
